Temporomandibular (TMJ) or Jaw Pain

DO YOU….
  • Experience Jaw or tooth pain in the morning?
  • Wake up with headaches?
  • Feel pain and/or tension in the upper neck region?
  • Do you wear a mouthguard at night?

The jaw is one of the most engaged joints in the body with an average use of 5000 times a day via talking, laughing, eating, chewing, swallowing, smiling etc. The jaw joint (often referred to as the Temporomandibular Joint or TMJ) can become irritated by stress and prior injury, which leads to grinding and clenching of the teeth (usually at night). TMJ can also cause neck pain and/or headaches. In many cases, the lateral and medial pterygoid muscles are often overworked and are typical pain generators for the jaw. You can find these muscles yourself TMJ can also caused applying slight pressure with your index finger along the point where the ear meets the jaw. If this point is tender, please let your provider know. Jaw treatments include light manual adjustments along with resistance exercises and manual work of the pterygoid muscles.
