Chiropractic Care & Athletes

With us entering the last month of the summer it only means one thing, football is right around the corner. All levels are starting to resume practices with the NFL having training camps, College having athletes on campus, and high schools hosting weight training and practices. With football being a notoriously high impact sport there is a need for chiropractic care as a recovery tool. Chiropractic’s involvement in football has really grown over the past few years and numerous athletes speak out of its game time benefit.

The National Football League (NFL) has a grueling schedule of 17 weeks with one bye week and if a team was to make it all the way to the Super Bowl that could add an additional 3-4 games. That can add a large toll of physical stress especially when you are lined up against the best of the best week in and week out. The initial benefit of having on staff chiropractors for the teams is to address the musculoskeletal system by offering a low-risk intervention to reduce the use of pharmacological treatments, surgeries, and other invasive procedures. At this point all 32 NFL teams have a chiropractic on staff and some teams even have 2 DCs. The Professional Football Chiropractic Society is a main organization that has built relationships between the players and the chiropractors. They offer continuing education and seminars for those wanting to learn more in sports. This crossover of chiropractic and football has been beneficial for both parties.

The benefits of chiropractic care can increase mobility, decrease tightness, and lower the risk of in game injuries. Other common conditions are neck/back pain, hamstring/quad strains, and whiplash injuries associated with concussions. The NFL views athletes as an investment, with an athlete you want them to perform at their best so the investment of taking care of your body can add on more pain free playing years. Chiropractic care seems to be a great addition on NFL staffs. To connect here is some quotes from NFL players speaking on their Chiropractic experience.

7-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady “Chiropractic just makes you feel so much better. When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller and everything’s in place. And as long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of the game.”

Hall of fame wide receiver Jerry Rice “I did a lot of things to stay in the game but regular visits to my chiropractor were among the most important”

Chiropractic care is not for NFL athletes alone, anyone can benefit from care. We like to consider every active person some sort of athlete and treat them as such. Reach out for any further information.
